Yogi Berra Quotes

Yogi Berra quotes and sayings. A famous sports figure and true American hero, Yogi [Lawrence Peter] Berra is probably best known as a catcher for the New York Yankees baseball team. Some of us remember him mostly as the manager of the Mets and Yankees.

He's a three time American League MVP winner, holds many records, and is in the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1998, Montclair State University in New Jersey opened the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center.

Berra has a way with words, using ironic, sarcastic, and sometimes a bit biting, witty humor. Below are some Yogi Berra quotes, with some of his thoughts about baseball, sports, and the fork in the road.

"It ain't over till it's over."
-Comment on National League pennant race [1973], Saying, Bartlett's Familiar Quotations 17th edition

Also sometimes quoted as saying "The game isn't over until it's over."
-Baseball-Almanac.com

"How can you think and hit at the same time?"

"In baseball, you don't know nothing."

"Slump? I ain't in no slump. I just ain't hitting."

"You can observe a lot just by watching."
-Baseball Almanac

Quoted in Bartlett's 17th edition as "You can observe a lot by watching" which corresponds to the title of the book, You Can Observe A Lot By Watching: What I've Learned About Teamwork From the Yankees and Life

"If people don't want to come out to the ballpark, how are you going to stop them?"-Baseball Almanac

(Attributed) according to Bartlett's as "If people don't want to come out to the ball park, nobody's going to stop them."

"It's like deja vu all over again."
-Baseball Almanac

(Attributed) according to Bartlett's as "It was deja vu all over again."

"When you come to a fork in the road, take it."
-Also attributed according to Bartlett's but said to come from driving directions to his house in New Jersey.

From Achievement.org...

'Berra's ebullient personality made him a favorite of fans and sportswriters, who delighted in his trademark aphorisms, the so-called Yogi-sms that made him the most-quoted athlete in history. "It ain't over 'til it's over," "It's déjà vu all over again," and "You can observe a lot just by watching," may sound like artless redundancies at first hearing, but they encapsulate attitudes of optimism and common sense that Americans admire in their heroes and strive for in themselves.'
