Keys to Success

There are a number of key factors to consider when it comes to success in any endeavor. Things like determination, focus, goals and planning come to mind. But often, success is a matter of trial and error. It is rarely a straight line from concept to completion. Sometimes, in fact, it's a straight line in the opposite direction!

Sometimes all you have to do is turn around!

Something I learned from taking Tony Robbins' home course Personal Power II was that I was going about things the wrong way.

In many of my activities over the years, I had focus, determination, sometimes planning, and often the smarts to get things done, but by my definition of success, I was not yet there. Personal Power II taught me that even though I thought I was doing the right things, my strategy was off.

Many of the answers to our puzzles are right in front of us, but other times, all you have to do is turn around. In Anthony Robbins' course, he tells us that sometimes your strategy, no matter how well planned, will never accomplish your goal.

To paraphrase, if your goal is to see a sunrise, and your strategy is to head west, then you're going to have a very hard time achieving that goal. Sometimes, all you have to do is turn around!

Is your stategy effective? Are your actions getting you where you want to go? No? Try turning around and see what happens to your success meter.

A Comment on Procrastination

Procrastination can only exist where action does not take place.

Think about that for a moment. Any time we can stop being a victim and take control, we should. If we view procrastination as something real or out of our control, then we give it power that it does not have.

Procrastination does not exist by itself. It only exists if we are not taking action. It's like an empty chair. The chair is only empty when someone is not sitting in it. You have the power to sit in the chair!

We only give procrastination power (in other words, make it real), when we fail to act. Take action now!

Music Soothes the Savage Beast

Music can be a great form of inspiration. Here are some select quotes about music...

"Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and cannot remain silent."

-Victor Hugo

"Music and silence combine strongly because music is done with silence, and silence is full of music."

-Marcel Marceau

"I've never known a musician who regretted being one. Whatever deceptions life may have in store for you, music itself is not going to let you down."

-Virgil Thomson

"After silence that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music."

-Aldous Huxley

"Music is the shorthand of emotion."

-Leo Tolstoy

"Take a music bath once or twice a week for a few seasons, and you will find that it is to the soul what the water-bath is to the body."

-Oliver Wendell Holmes

"Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without."

-Confucius

"Without music, life would be an error."

-Friedrich Nietzsche

"To stop the flow of music would be like the stopping of time itself, incredible and inconceivable."

-Aaron Copeland

Inspiring Facts

I hope you read my article on sharing stories. Country Crock is providing up to 1 million meals for needy families, and you can help. On that note, here are some interesting facts that I thought worth sharing.

Did you know that whether you buy Ben and Jerry's or Breyers ice cream, your money is going to the same company? In fact, this company is the largest manufacturer of ice cream in the world, employing over 200,000 people.

Now, ice cream has a tendancy to make you put on weight, right? Well, did you know that when you buy Slim Fast, you are also contributing to the profits of that same company? What about Skippy peanut butter? Yup, same company! Imperial margarine too. Hellmann's mayonnaise and I Can't Believe It's Not Butter also.

Here are some more brands that you may be buying that send your money to that same giant company...

Scottish Blend and Lipton tea, Heartbrand ice cream, Popsicle and Fudgsicle, Lawry's and Adolph's seasoning, Ragu pasta sauce, and Country Crock margarine.

If that's not enough... Dove, Pond's and Vaseline are all under ownership of this company as is Caress. So is Suave, Signal, Degree, Sure, Brut, and Pepsodent. Add in Q-Tips, Surf, Axe, Impulse, and Lever 2000 also.

The inspiring thing is that first, if you've bought one of these products in the past (Country Crock is in my refrigerator), you've already contributed to feeding a family. Second, the sheer complexity of putting all of those brands (and many more I did not list) under one umbrella shows us that just about anything is possible. Third, that a company can exist and have a product in almost every household in many countries, and most of us not even know it's the same company.

Think about what else is going on around you all the time that you may not know about or be aware of. How can you use that information to better get what you want out of life?

Oh, the name of the company? Unilever.

Are You Setting Your Goals High Enough?

Are You Setting Your Goals High Enough?

Are you sure?

"If you're disappointed with the results you're getting, it's not because your expectations are too high. It's because those expectations are not high enough to pull you forward."

-Ralph Marston

"People are not lazy. They simply have impotent goals - that is, goals that do not inspire them."

-Tony Robbins

Want something to pull you forward? Try some motivation a la Tony Robbins.

Does Desire Kill Achievement?

"For many years, my friend and former partner JG used to talk to me about the negative effect that desire has on achievement. I never liked the idea, because I harbored two incorrect ideas:

I thought that desiring something would help me accomplish it. (This is a giant mistake that most success coaches make.)

I believed that eradicating desire would eradicate happiness.

Now I understand how foolish those two thoughts were and how harmful they were to my ability to both accomplish goals and enjoy the fruits of those accomplishments."

Just Do It!

"The easiest way to become something special is also the fastest: Just start doing it. Don't wait for the "right" time. Don't worry about not being qualified. And don't worry about getting paid for it. Just start doing it."

-Michael Masterson

A friend of mine has been going through a tough time for almost a year. He says he wants to be in a better place, and I've been hearing this same story from him all this time. Unfortunately, he has been either unwilling or unable to do the necessary things to change his situation. It's only been recently that he's actually taken some consistent action towards bettering his situation.

Nike has the right idea... "just do it." Take action. Don't wait, don't give excuses, just act!

Take Action on Your Decisions!

I saw this Tony Robbins quote in Allan Gardyne's newsletter...

"A real decision is measured by the fact that you've taken a new
action. If there's no action, you haven't truly decided."

-Tony Robbins

Tony reminds us that when we de-cide, we are really cutting off all other possibilities. So, when de-ciding, the next step is to take some action in the direction you want to go based on your decision. If you're not acting on your decision, then you must have some reservations about it!

This goes back to my same old broken record... take action. Even if your decision turns out to be wrong, or not the best one, take action. Without action, you're just floating. An old teacher and friend of mine used to tell me... "if you go in motion, something else will go in motion." It's true. We almost never take a straight line to the finish, but if we don't move in some direction, then we are not making progress.

What have you decided on recently? Did you take action? Take action today!

New Year's Resolutions

I started thinking about resolutions since it's that time again, and here is what I came up with...

Every year thousands of people make New Year's resolutions... resolutions that they never keep. This year, before looking forward, I decided to look back at 2006 and see what I had actually done. It wasn't until I started thinking about it that I realized just how much I had accomplished and how much my life has changed for the better. Below is a partial list. I'll make 2007 even better. You might want to try this exercise on for size. Who knows, you might just realize that you can up the stakes on your resolutions!

In 2006 I:

Sold one house and moved into another brand new one which I had built.

Went through a friendly divorce.

Fine tuned what I really want and should be getting out of a relationship.

Increased my income by several thousand dollars.

Overcame two long time fears (flying and roller coasters).

Met a fantastic sexy woman who is the best girlfriend I could ask for.

Became more social again and made new friends.

Started exercising again and got into better shape than I have been in in years.

Learned to let go more.

Realized that many of my old friends really appreciate me.

Took a number of financial and emotional risks.

Reconnected with some old friends.

Rediscoverd my love for playing the drums and met a number of musician friends.

Took more quality "me" time.

Helped a friend through some really hard times.

Challenged myself to be a better person.

Learned to reward myself more often.

Realized that I had been denying myself many of life's little pleasures.

Spent more time with my parents than I have in years.

Started a new web site and researched several more possibles for the future.

Learned how to better enjoy myself.

Became less focused on process and more focused on results where needed.

Became less focused on outcomes and more focused on enjoying the journey.

Moved out of the same town I'd been living in for the last 8 years.

Practiced being more generous.

Realized that it's not whether the glass is half empty or half full that counts... when the right person is doing the pouring, the glass is always overflowing.

Now, what did you do last year? What are you going to do this year? Go do it and have a great year!

Step by Step, Inch by Inch...

As you can imagine, I've reviewed a fair number of personal development web sites, books, courses, and the like. Much of the self development type material is all over the place, and seems sort of... well... mystical.

The result is that with most self development programs, you come away with the idea that if you do what the material says you should do, you'll get the benefits that have been promised. Easier said than done since the material itself usually does not take you step by step through what you actually need to do.

There are a number of reasons for this I believe, including poor writing. After all, a good coach doesn't necessarily have to be a good writer.

The answer? Well, one answer is to visit this web site and follow the "block by block" concept. The four blocks actually address some of the major difficulties in making personal change.

It's pretty simple when you think about it. Find out where you are, where you're going, how to best get there, and how to deal with what might get in your way! Sounds like a formula for success to me. Try it out...

Inspiration vs. Motivation | What's the Difference?

It could be said that nothing happens without inspiration. If that's true, then it stands to reason that the key to motivating ourselves and others lies in finding out what inspires us.

Fear! Kill It, Stomp It, Burn It! Feel It?!!

This past weekend was quite the treat! With the help of a very special and very patient friend, I took my own advice and overcame my fear of roller coasters. I had not been on a roller coaster in years, and I had never been on a high speed coaster, let alone one that flipped me upside down. Nevertheless, I rode several high speed coasters and was accelerated, twisted, yanked backwards, and flipped upside down many times. It was scary, exciting, fun, and a very freeing experience all at the same time. I enjoyed it so much that I went back and rode the scariest one a second time just to stomp on my fear one more time. I am ready to go again any time. Bring it on!

I highly recommend that you choose a fear and a friend who can help you, and conquer it. You will feel an exhilaration and a freedom that you cannot get any other way. You will feel lighter, like a weight has been lifted, and you will want to try more new things. It will enhance your life!

Thanks Cindy, I owe you!
