Fitness Motivation Fizzled?
Avoid These Mistakes

Does your fitness motivation need a makeover? If you're like most of us, you know you need to exercise, and you know you need to eat right. You start out with high hopes and the best of intentions.

At some point, though, something kills your enthusiasm. You sink back into a routine and your level of fitness probably isn't where you want it to be.

Your drive is probably being killed by several factors. In fact, you're probably making some common mistakes. I've outlined some of the usual suspects below.

Did you know?

Fitness dumbbell
Research shows that shorter exercise workouts of varying intensity (known commonly among athletes as interval training) are far better for promoting heart health than long, slow cardio workouts. They're also better at burning fat and reducing your weight, while preserving muscle mass.

Here are 5 things that are killing your fitness motivation

Turbulence Training for Fitness Motivation
1. Long, boring, and time consuming cardio workouts

Cardio workouts are boring, and they're killing your drive. In today's world, most of us don't have the time or the inclination to put up with hour long cardio workouts.

Want to do body sculpting? Build muscle? Get those abs in shape? That takes even more time on top of the cardio.

Stop all that. You don't need to spend hour upon hour in the gym every week. In fact, the newest information is that cardio may actually be bad for long term heart health.

Many doctors and exercise physiologists are now telling us that if you combine interval training with strength training, you more closely resemble the natural fat burning/muscle building activities of our ancestors. This leads to quicker and lasting fat loss, the development of strong lean muscle, and better heart health.

2. Lack of results

Let's face it, downward spirals are easy to fall into, and lack of results is a fitness motivation killer for sure. Dieting pretty much sucks, and we know by now that "diets don't work."

We also know that if you're not in good shape, that your body is not very efficient. That means that your workouts have to be as efficient as possible.

Most commercial fitness clubs, however, are not there to help you get in shape. They're there to sell memberships. That's about it. The workouts they typically put you on when you join are not very efficient or very effective.

Most traditional exercise programs are based on old, outdated methods. They take hour upon hour to complete. They fool you sometimes because you may see some results, but then you invariably get "stuck" and go no further.

So, even those exercise DVD's you bought aren't doing you any favors.

The result? Long hours either in the gym or at home with not much to show for it. And so it goes for most of us.

3. Lack of a system

Going it on your own and failing? I've been there myself after being disappointed by trainer led workouts in the gym, home workout DVD's, and machines I bought and used only twice.

Sound familiar?

You don't need another diet. You don't need another gym membership or fitness machine. You don't need hours of cardio and other workouts of questionable value.

What you need is something to kick start and maintain your fitness motivation. The best thing for that is... results.

Results that you can see and feel in a reasonable amount of time.

What you need, then, is a complete system that works. Something you can be sure that will show real results for your efforts.

The only realistic way to lose fat and get fit is to burn more calories than you consume. The more efficiently you can do this, the better your results will be.

As one of the most efficient, complete workout/nutrition plans that builds muscle and burns fat fast, I highly recommend Craig Ballantyne's Turbulence Training program.

4. Lack of support

It's much harder to maintain your fitness motivation if you don't have a support system in place. I recommend you do two things.

First, support yourself. What I mean by this is write down your goals and refer to them often. This alone is a huge boost for your fitness motivation. Having goals without writing them down is like writing a letter but never mailing it!

Second, find a friend or family member who won't judge your success or failure. Share your goals with this person and have them act as your coach. There's strength in numbers. If this person also wants to get into shape then all the better. You can act as coaches for each other. Remember not to judge, only encourage.

5. Stay out of the gym!

Most of the people that I know who've bought gym memberships (myself included) never got their money's worth.

It's a typical scenario. You sign up, you're all excited, and you've paid your money so you're determined to make it work for you. But, the money you spend on that "fitness club" membership isn't enough to keep you motivated.

Invariably, you:

  • Don't see the results you want

  • Resent having to pay every month for something that's not working well

  • Start going less often

  • Resent having to drive to the gym because it's a waste of time

  • Tell yourself that you're going to the gym less because you're too busy and "life gets in the way"

Eventually, you quit going completely, but still keep paying your monthly membership because "eventually, I'll get back to it."

Sound familiar? We've all been there.

The above are some of the main reasons people lose their fitness motivation.

For years, the answer to losing more belly fat was to increase the duration of your low intensity cardio workouts. The answer to achieving a flat stomach was to increase the number of crunches you do. It turns out that's exactly the wrong answer and for thousands of people, is what is killing their fitness motivation!

But there is a better way.

Forget ineffective crunches, hours on the treadmill, and the bad for the knees activity of jogging. Newer workouts that are based on shorter, more intense, more effective fat burning/muscle building movements. They're also less likely to injure your knees or your back. These are workouts that you can do in the privacy of your own home. Forget the 10 or 20 minute drive to the gym (that's 20 to 40 minutes that you could be working out and losing fat instead!).

Tips To Kick Start Your Fitness Motivation

  • Trade in those long, boring cardio workouts (and endless ab crunches too) for the more effective shorter interval training and full body strength training workouts.

  • Accept that your lack of results are based on the past, not the future, and resolve to start doing what works

  • Get yourself a proven system that suits you, including a nutrition plan, and a workout routine based on the more modern approach to fitness that doesn't rely on cardio. Shorter bursts of energy with alternating periods of rest are where it's at.

  • Get yourself a support system. First, write down your goals. Second, find a friend and let them be your coach. A number of the online fitness workout routines that are sold today include forums and memberships where you can get lots of support from others, including the program creator.

  • Stop going to the gym and don't buy any more fitness machines. Trade in your monthly gym membership fee for a much less expensive workout routine (like this one) that you can do at home with inexpensive gear. You'll be able to sell your fitness machine and pay for the workout ebook/ecourse, not to mention how much you'll save by not going to the gym.
